Halitosis, or bad breath as it is commonly known, is a repulsive condition that most of us would never want to have. There are many causes of bad breath and one of them is post nasal drip or PND.

You know you have post nasal drip when you have any of these symptoms: swallowing or spitting mucus constantly, tickling in the throat that causes you to keep on clearing your throat, thick phlegm that is stuck at the back of your throat, congestion in your nose.

The causes of post nasal drip could be a cold, the flu, allergies, cold temperatures, bright lights, certain foods, and even hormonal changes caused by pregnancy. It can also be caused by irritation to pollution.

Post nasal drip should not be left unnoticed and should be treated promptly. Diagnosing yourself and going to the drugstore for self medication is a no-no. Go to a doctor who specializes in nasal infections and have them properly diagnose what is causing your condition and follow his/her prescriptions.

The usual treatment includes antihistamines if it is cause by allergies. For PND caused by colds, decongestants are a big help. Nasal sprays can also assist in keeping post nasal drip at bay.

Sometimes, if the condition cannot be treated by medicine, surgery is recommended. This usually is the case if your PND is caused by abnormalities in the sinuses.

Still, the best way to relieve it is to stay away from pollutants and allergens. When you have the symptoms for this condition, see a doctor immediately.
