Post Nasal Drip Triggers
By Jeff M Ray
Our body continually produces mucous to trap tiny particles such as dust, etc and to stop them from filtering into our breathing system that is why they mucous are thick and sticky. Though mucous is usually swallowed, it sometimes causes a sensation of dripping from the back of the nose called Post nasal drip (PND). Some causes of Post Nasal Drip are the thickening of the mucous secretions or even excessive mucous, or by the thickening of the throat or muscle disorder. Excessive mucous production will also cause swelling of the sinus lining, bleeding, polyps and irritation. PND will also affect your breath as it is high in proteins and is an excellent food source for anaerobic bacteria.
The most common causes of post nasal drip are the inhaled irritants, dairy products, food allergies and illnesses.
Irritants are stopped by the mucous from spreading to our main breathing area. When there is a lot of dust or when our body is sensitive to such particles, an allergic reaction or rhinitis happens.
Dairy products such as milk, cheese, yoghurt and others can cause mucous to thicken significantly and this can hold back proper drainage.
Food allergies can easily thicken the mucous and will also inhibit proper drainage.
Illnesses such as flu, colds, tonsillitis and ear infections are also considered as main causes of post nasal drip and excessive mucous production. Asthma suffers are easily burdened by excess mucous because this can trigger an attack as it will be difficult to breath through the nasal passages and instead breath through the mouth.
